Using Annuities Effectively in Retirement Planning Jun 4 2026

Retirement planning is about far more than simply accumulating wealth during one’s lifetime. The real challenge comes when assets need to be turned into a reliable and sustainable income that lasts for the rest of a client’s life, regardless of how long that may be.

While pension freedoms have expanded the choices available at retirement, greater flexibility has also placed more responsibility on individuals to manage longevity risk, market volatility and future spending needs. In this context, annuities can still play an important and valuable role when used as part of a broader, well‑structured retirement plan.

Certainty Where It Matters Most

One of the greatest risks in retirement is running out of money. Unlike investment‑led solutions, an annuity can provide a guaranteed income, either for life or a specified period. This can remove uncertainty around how long pension assets must last, or, bridge a gap until other income sources, such as the state pension or a defined benefit scheme, become payable.

For many clients, particularly later in retirement, this can be extremely valuable. Annuity income can be used to underpin essential expenditure such as household bills, food and lifestyle basics, covering costs that do not disappear if markets fall or expenses rise unexpectedly.

Reducing Over-Reliance on Market Performance

Income drawdown offers flexibility but also exposes retirees to sequencing risk, the danger that poor investment returns early in retirement permanently damage the sustainability of income. Read more about sequencing risk here.

By allocating part of a pension fund to an annuity, a client can reduce the need to draw income from invested assets during less favourable market conditions. This can allow the remaining portfolio to be invested with a longer‑term perspective, supporting growth and flexibility elsewhere in the plan.

Blending Flexibility and Security

Once an annuity has been purchased, there are no options to make changes to the plan later. There are a number of options that can be factored into an annuity purchase including provision for a spouse, increasing income levels and guaranteed protection periods, all of which will have a material impact upon the income that is offered. The greater the overall benefits, the lower the initial income that might be offered. We have therefore found that annuities are often most effective as part of a blended approach rather than a single, all‑or‑nothing decision.

For example:

Secure income can be created using an annuity to cover core, regular expenditure.

Remaining funds stay invested via drawdown to support discretionary spending, tax planning and legacy objectives.
This structure helps balance peace of mind with flexibility and is particularly well suited to clients who value income security but do not want to give up control of all their capital.

Making Use of Enhanced Annuity Rates

For clients with certain medical conditions or lifestyle factors, enhanced annuities can provide a materially higher income. These factors are often overlooked but can significantly improve value compared to standard rates.

Careful assessment and access to the open market is essential to ensure clients receive the most favourable terms available for their individual circumstances.

Not a Default — but Not Outdated

As the options for an annuity must be established at outset, annuities are sometimes dismissed as inflexible or poor value, yet this overlooks how much both products and planning techniques have changed over time. Not least since we have seen interest rates return to higher levels in recent years resulting in higher annuity rates on offer. They are no longer a default option for everyone at retirement, but equally, they should not be excluded simply because flexibility exists elsewhere.

The key with any planning decisions we make with clients is appropriateness, not popularity. Used selectively and advised upon properly, annuities can provide reassurance, resilience and simplicity where they can add the most value to client situations.

A Personal Decision, not a Product Choice

Ultimately, whether an annuity is suitable depends on a client’s wider circumstances, their expenditure needs, health, other sources of income, tax position and wider family objectives.

At Taylor Money, retirement planning begins with understanding our clients’ aspirations, not just their pension objectives, and the options available and most suited to them. Annuities are one of several tools available, and when used thoughtfully, they can form a strong part of a well‑balanced, long‑term retirement strategy.
