APDS, a leading motor-control solutions provider, has successfully helped Bott Ltd, a fellow member of the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, achieve a 65% reduction in energy consumption at their North Cornwall manufacturing site. This project, which delivered a return on investment (ROI) in under five months, underscores the power of collaboration between Chamber members to drive sustainability and operational efficiency.

Bott Ltd, a renowned manufacturer of workplace storage and van racking systems, has long been committed to reducing its carbon footprint. The business identified an opportunity to improve energy efficiency in their powder coating line, where a 37kW fan was consuming excessive power, add approached APDS for assistance.

Smart Energy Solutions Deliver Immediate Impact

APDS conducted an on-site assessment using advanced energy monitoring tools to analyse the fan’s power usage. The team recommended replacing the existing soft-start system with an ABB ACH580 Variable Speed Drive (VSD), optimising the fan’s speed while ensuring production efficiency.

Key enhancements included:

• Optimised Fan Speed: Reduced by 10% without compromising performance
• Adaptive Control Features: Slow-speed mode for process backups and full-speed mode for cleaning operations
• Seamless System Integration: New control relays installed to align with existing line controls

Impressive Results & Sustainability Gains

Within just one week of implementation, Bott Ltd recorded a drastic drop in energy consumption from 1,366.87 kWh to 428.16 kWh – a 65% reduction. This translated into a payback period of fewer than 17 weeks, delivering both environmental and financial benefits.

“We’re thrilled to have helped Bott Ltd achieve such significant energy savings,” said Nathan Morgan, Managing Director at APDS. “This project showcases how Chamber connections can lead to real-world business improvements, demonstrating the value of collaboration and innovation in Cornwall’s manufacturing sector.”
