Finance in Cornwall 2026

May 13, 2026
09:00
- 14:00

Lighthouse Cinema, Newquay

Free

This free half‑day event designed to help businesses across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly navigate the changing funding landscape in 2026. With grant and paid-for business support expected to reduce significantly this year, understanding the full range of equity and debt options, including non-bank routes, has never been more important.

Also to make it easier for more people to attend, we are starting slightly later this year. Registration and refreshments open at 9am, with presentations beginning at 9.30am.

Keynote speaker: James Sproule, Chief Economist, Handelsbanken UK

James was appointed in 2020 and has built a trusted adviser relationship with a wide range of the bank’s clients, while also playing a key role in its broader risk management work. His career includes senior economic and policy positions with think tanks, the Institute of Directors, Accenture, Bankers Trust, and the boutique investment bank Augusta and Company. He has also served as a Senior Business Adviser to Prime Minister Boris Johnson and began his career as a signals officer in the Royal Navy, where he remains an honorary Captain.

James’s talk will explore the direction of the UK economy. Is it all headwinds, or are there positive breezes too? He will share insight on the outlook for growth, debt, inflation, interest rates and the property market, helping attendees make sense of the challenges and opportunities ahead.

What to expect on the day

This event is designed for business owners and leaders at every stage; from start-up to scale-up through to succession and exit. It offers practical insight, the chance to hear directly from funding providers, and plenty of networking with peers and local experts.

Our programme includes three focused sessions:

Session 1: Economic Perspective

Hear from the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, the British Business Bank, our keynote speaker and others as they set the scene for 2026 and the wider economic environment.

Session 2: Debt Funding

Learn about the wide range of debt options available, including high street routes, non-bank lenders, and alternative finance providers. Speakers will give simple ten-minute overviews so you can quickly understand what might be right for your business.

Session 3: Equity Funding

Explore equity options from regional and national providers, including early-stage, growth and private equity. Each speaker will provide a clear summary of their offer and who it suits.

Across all three sessions, you’ll hear from several external specialists, each sharing practical insight and ideas you can follow up on after the event.
