Our CEO, Toby Parkins, has written an opinion piece based on lessons he learnt 18 months ago, at Manchester Tech Week.
He explains how, despite Manchester and Cornwall looking nothing alike on a map, the camaraderie, sense of belonging and the way businesses collaborate across the usual competitive lines feels familiar.
One difference he identified was how Manchester’s business community behaves as though the region’s growth is theirs to drive: “Manchester’s real lesson isn’t about mayors or devolution deals. It’s about who believes they’re responsible for their region’s success”.
“Andy Burnham has made Manchester the proof that regions can drive their own growth when trusted to. If Cornwall can show him, and everyone who thinks that way, that our spirit and drive can deliver the same, we change the terms of the conversation. Devolution is earned, not handed out — and the better Cornwall behaves like a region that knows where it’s going, the better the outcome Cornwall will get”.
